Help us at Alcatraz find Johnny Cash song

Help us at Alcatraz find Johnny Cash song
Average: 3.3 (4 votes)

I work at Alcatraz and the other day a visitor from Ireland sang a song to me that he said was a Johnny Cash song entitled "Don't climb the fence Joe Bowers". No one on the island had heard of it before. Joe Bowers was the first "escape attempt" from Alcatraz in 1936, but many believe it was a suicide because he climbed a fence -- in front of a guard -- that had a sheer 75 foot drop to the water and rocks below and therefore couldn't possibly escape that way. I can't find this song anywhere, but it may be possible that a song was released in the UK that was not released in the US. Has anyone heard of this? We on the island would be most grateful for any information. Thanks.

I might be wrong but I think the song you are looking for is called "The Wall".
You can find it on the Folsom Prison album....it's one of my favs!.

The final line in the song goes:
"The newspapers said it was a jail break plan, but I knew it was suicide, I knew it was suicide".

Hope this helps.
